Taqtu is an Inuk artist from Taloyoak, Nunavut. Taqtu was raised alongside three brothers, and calls Iqaluit home. They create art from both learned, and self-taught traditional skills. Taqtu’s experience as an artist began at a young age in performance, Throat Singing & Drum Dancing. Taqtu works with the Inuit community, reconnecting them to their language, culture and history. They continue working closely with Inuit, running art-based workshops like sewing, beading, printmaking, & throat singing. Their most renowned and recognized project is a mural painted by Inuit youth in downtown Ottawa on Somerset.
Taqtu’s philosophy is to incorporate Inuit components such as Kakiniit, traditional tattoos and Inuit tools, and animals into modern art pieces. Taqtu draws inspiration from their traditional values, upbringing, elders, Contemporary Inuit art and from Inuit in the community.
