Pique festival uncovers groundbreaking music and art at its fall edition, featuring live music, art installations, DJs, and artist talks

The change of season once again brings an exciting music and arts convergence at Pique’s fall edition, happening on September 28, 2024 at the Arts Court. The 14th edition of Ottawa’s signature underground art party, Pique brings together groundbreaking music, visual, and interdisciplinary artists for a building-wide festival at the Arts Court in downtown Ottawa. Experimental and underground music, media art installation, drag and ballroom performance, and more will be showcased across eight stages and exhibition spaces, indoors and outdoors. Admission is pay-what-you-can and all-ages

Featuring performances and presentations by international and out-of-town artists including punk-feminist sound artist Evicshen, ethereal soundscapist and harpist for Kelela Ahya Simone, commanding punk rave duo Pelada, cutting-edge pop vanguard Cecile Believe, spectral noise-pop songwriter LA Timpa, noisemaker and new music subversive Olivia Shortt, avant-garde tropi-pop producer chiquitamagic, cyberpunk pop star 8485, and alt-jazz/R&B siren M.I.BLUE. Exploring the edges of art and performance, local artists will present new and improvised works, including experimental alt-pop producer Yolande Laroche, radical sound conductors SUBR (صبر), performance artist Matt Miwa, soundscape improviser Kathryn Patricia Cobbler, CRT frequency modulator crhunchy!, and exploratory percussionist Scott Warren. Plus, the first-ever kiki ball at Pique curated by Yéila + Legendary OA Mother Maldita Siriano, and a multi-media exhibition exploring decolonized desire curated by Eva Grant, comes to the Pique fall edition. Finally, Topique symposium returns to Pique with a series of artist talks and workshops (to be announced). With more than 30 artists, curators, and speakers, there is so much to experience at Pique.

Broadcasting live from Club SAW and the SAW Courtyard during Pique, tune into Cybernetique anywhere in the world. Featuring dynamic performances all evening long, the Cybernetique live broadcast features professional-quality audio and visuals, making it about as good as being there in person. Virtual attendees can also tune into exclusive interactive content hosted on the Debaser’s Instagram to engage with our hosts and socialize with fellow virtual attendees.

As always, tickets to Pique are pay-what-you-can with a suggested price range of $35-65 (taxes and fees included), or choose-your-own-price. Tickets are available on our Eventbrite page.

PROGRAMMING

Featuring a diverse array of sounds, from experimental sound art and tropical dance pop to minimal electronic, post-internet hyperpop, ethereal soundscapes, neo-soul R&B, and many styles in between, the music programming at Pique's fall edition promises to be as dynamic and eclectic as ever, drawing inspiration from underground music scenes worldwide. Musicians from London, Los Angeles, Detroit, and San Francisco, converge with Canadian and local artists for cross-pollination and discovery.

Guest curators bring in new perspectives from the margins of art and performance milieux. A multimedia exhibition curated by Eva Grant will call on visitors to explore their relationship to land, surveillance, and decolonization, while a kiki ball curated by Yéila + Legendary OA Mother Maldita Siriano brings together local and out-of-town ballroom artists to compete for titles and prizes.

Arrive early to engage in workshops, artist talks and demonstrations. Stay late to experience groundbreaking performances, walk the kiki ball, and dance to innovative selectors.

CO-PRESENTATIONS

In partnership with Radio-Hull, a project of DAÏMÔN artist-run centre, two live-to-air audio presentations will take place at Pique: a radio-responsive performance by improvising percussionist Scott Warren accompanied by a generative audio piece played through the Radio Hull airwaves, and an audience-interactive astrological report from theatre artist Matt Miwa.

Our partnership with the Indigenous Curatorial Collective continues to support curatorial projects by emerging Indigenous curators, and will support Eva Grant’s exhibition at the fall edition of Pique. Plus, we are thrilled to renew our partnership with the Ottawa International Animation Festival and welcome animators from around the world to experience Pique. The OIAF’s signature Drink and Draw returns to the fall edition program with a new roster of cosplayers to sketch.

Finally, we are pleased to partner with Toronto’s Venus Fest to co-present performances by sound artist and instrument creator Evicshen, and harpist and songwriter Ahya Simone.
